VB-FD
Fiberglass Damper

What is VB-FD?
VB-FD is a thin, composite material engineered to create pockets of differing density between the various layers of fiberglass mat. VB-FD is paper thin and consists of two layers of paper that sandwich a core layer of thin aluminum.

How does VB-FD work?
For example, a fiberglass speaker enclosure may be made of several, thick layers of fiberglass mat. Although the walls of the enclosure may be thick, the enclosure will still "ring" excessively. VB-FD is designed to be cut into strips and placed in between the various layers of fiberglass mat with some separation (1" - 2") between the strips. These pockets of differing density positioned at various points around the construction will effectively reduce the resonant frequency of the enclosure and prevent sound energy from being converted into mechanical energy.

The outer paper layers of VB-FD will soak up the resin liquid and the aluminum layer will not. This aluminum layer is what creates the "pocket" that contributes to a lower resonant frequency.

Does VB-FD require any special tools to install?
No special tools are required to install this product. It only needs to be cut into strips and inserted as the fiberglass construction progressess.

Customer Commentary:
Jon R. Whitledge / Scientist, Engineer and Installation Expert

"As a Polymer Scientist and Mechanical Engineer, who is a specialist in the field of viscoelasticity, I intimately understand the nature of composite structures. The goal of any composite structure is to achieve a maximally optimal fiber content, by volume, while maintaining a minimally optimum and uniform distribution of polymeric matrix. Because the fibers behave as perfectly elastic (low hysteresis, not"stretchy") solids and the polymeric matrix is above its glass transition temperature, composites typically possess little internal damping. When I designed the critical composite structures for what The Absolute Sound magazine proclaimed to be "The World's Best Car Stereo", I chose Cascade Audio's VB-FD for incorporation into my loudspeaker enclosures and stereo electronics mounting surfaces. I believe the use of VB-FD substantially improves the internal damping of my composite structures, resulting in noticeably improved sonic performance."
